Lifts and academy. An odd couple until a few years ago, but now thanks to new interests arising in the university world and to the foresight of the sector operators, is an established fact. After two years, on 14th December 2015, the seminar “Beyond the square and the X - The design of the lift in architecture” (2nd edition - auditorium of Cotonificio veneziano)1, organized by the Iuav University in Venice, Department of Architecture and Building Preservation, and supported by leading companies and industry associations. Coordination and presentation were by Dario Trabucco, Iuav / CTBUH and Elena Giacomello, Iuav. Elevatori participated as a media partner.
3. MARINE INSTALLATIONS Gianluca Ferrari, Wittur; Luciano Spotti, Wittur Marine; Tiziano Caresani, ICM This speech was the result of several professionals, belonging to the corporate world, boasting knowledge and field experience. Gianluca Ferrari - Italy & exports Sales Director of Wittur corporate director business development – discussed the lifts for the cruise sector. The main general trend of this tourist business is the aging of the customers, which is an established fact in the economically developed countries. Think that from 2009 to 2015, there has been an increase from 17.8 million passengers to 23 million and, in the same period, the capacity of cruise ships increased by 18% (source: Clia). The trend does not only involve big teams, but also an elite and niche sector as the yacht one.
Luciano Spotti, production manager of Wittur Marine, discussed the technical construction of lifts for the marine industry and in the opening of his speech claimed that the shipbuilding industry in Italy is an industry excellence, although not always recognized. The first thing a designer should keep in mind when designing a lift for a ship (of any size) is that this system will have to withstand continuous stresses (pitch and roll). It is crucial to know that there are precise reference standards and requirements for the safety, in addition to the technical requirements of each component (i.e. car sling and doors, IMO and MED guidelines).
Cruise ships apart, a contribution to the yachts was given by Tiziano Caresani - responsible for the technical and R&D departments and certifications, ICM, who discussed a case study on a special system design for a luxury private yacht. For this type of boats, the lift is a novelty of the last 15 years and, given the features of the environment, you cannot talk about standardization of the product: the work is fully customized, there are no budget limits. In this case, the lift was at the centre of the ship, the core of the surrounding space.
An important role in cruise environments is played by interior design, which is often a priority. Manufacturers usually meet the imaginative desires of the customers. However, we should add that this does not exhaust the complexity of the relationship between architecture and vertical transportation.
