UCM Modernization of lifts at WITTUR Headquarters in Wiedenzhausen, Germany

The lift industry has recently focused on the danger of Unintended car movement (UCM) when lift doors are in open position.

As a result, EN 81-1:1998-A3:2009 und EN81-2:1998-A3:2009 norms were published to ensure that new lift installations are equipped with devices against unintended car movement.
In this respect, also existing lifts should receive the same attention; in particular, The German TRBS 1121, according to the Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health, describes  a procedure for “change or important modifications of lifts” based on the norms.
This is the reason why Wittur decided to upgrade all the existing lifts in the Wittur building, installed in 2008, to the state-of-the-art from a safety point of view.

This is the reason why Wittur decided to upgrade all the existing lifts in the Wittur building, installed in 2008, to the state-of-the-art from a safety point of view.
One out of three systems were easy to handle, due to certified components and brakes including Wittur BSG-25P progressive safety gears. By equipping them with a Wittur EOS electronic overspeed governor and an interface box, a complete system certified UCM solution was obtained.
A system is equipped with a cerified drive-brake. In this case too the modificastions has taken place without any problems.
 
As the third lift was not equipped with a UCM certified brake, Wittur partnered with TÜV SÜD Industrial Service GmbH to develop a special service solution for this lift, which wouldn’t take into consideration previous tests and verification of the reaction time of the brake. The UCM functionality  of the lift was instead tested based on a direct examination of the lift running under  practical conditions, while extreme operating conditions were simulated by computer software. After performing tests and calculations the lift was certified by TÜV SÜD with a type examination certification issued for this single lift installation.
