Taurus Doors for the Centro Botín Museum in Santander: Form Meets Function!

Wittur Taurus heavy-duty doors installed in the main IMEM LIFTS’ passenger+freight elevator of the innovative Spanish visual arts complex “Centro Botín”, in Santander (Spain).
IMEM LIFTS installed a 5-meter-high, 3.8-meter-wide, machine-room-less (MRL) elevator with a 6500-kg/86-passenger capacity serving four floors with a travel distance of 20.3 m at a speed of 1 mps .

Moving visitors and artworks within a museum is a complex and delicate process. Passenger elevators in such public spaces must combine high-traffic resistance and performance features with superior aesthetic qualities. Freight elevators should be able to transport notable works of art, from the smallest miniatures to the biggest masterpieces, in the safest and soundest way.

In the main elevator installed in the visual arts center, “Centro Botín”, in Santander (Spain) all these characteristics come together! Within this astonishing building (designed by the world-famous Italian architect Renzo Piano), IMEM LIFTS installed a 5-meter-high, 3.8-meter-wide, machine-room-less (MRL) elevator with a 6500-kg/86-passenger capacity serving four floors with a travel distance of 20.3 m at a speed of 1 mps. An innovative vertical transportation system where form perfectly meets function, creating a unique space that impress visitors (thanks also to a full glass cabin wall looking the outer garden of the museum) and safely move artworks within the building at once.

Wittur was proudly part of this project! Our Taurus car and landing automatic doors, center opening with four panels and finished in Scotch-Brite stainless steel, were chosen for IMEM LIFTS’ one-of-a-kind elevator. The doors are insulated against heat loss with a horizontal entry clearance of 3.6 m and vertical clearance of 4 m. The airtight seal between the door panels, and between the panels and the door frame, ensure the doors are smoke-proof when closed. Furthermore, the car door opening is fitted with a photocell barrier along its full height that protects passengers, artworks and the doors themselves.
