ISO 8100-1 and ISO 8100-2: The New International Reference for Lifts

ISO 8100-1 and ISO 8100-2: The New International Reference for Lifts

A Global Framework for Lift Safety

ISO 8100-1 and ISO 8100-2 establish a globally harmonized framework for the safety, design, construction, installation, inspection, and testing of passenger and goods-passenger lifts.
Building on the recognized foundations of EN 81-20 and EN 81-50, these international standards provide a common reference for lift safety across global markets. By promoting greater alignment of requirements worldwide, ISO 8100 supports innovation, facilitates international market access, and contributes to consistent safety and quality standards throughout the industry.

Main Changes Introduced by ISO 8100

ISO 8100 introduces updated provisions and technical clarifications designed to support passenger safety, maintenance activities, system reliability, and the integration of evolving technologies.
  • Door Safety
Enhanced provisions for landing and car doors include updated safety functions and additional measures aimed at reducing the risk of hand and finger injuries, contributing to safer passenger interaction with lift systems.
  • Suspension and Lifting Systems
The standard expands the framework for suspension technologies by recognizing solutions beyond traditional steel wire ropes, while defining the corresponding safety, verification, and performance requirements needed to support their application.
  • Braking and Safety Functions Updated provisions for brake systems, monitoring functions, and safety-related controls help support the reliable and safe operation of lift systems throughout their lifecycle.
  • Electrical and Control Systems
ISO 8100 incorporates updated considerations for safety-related electrical systems and emergency operations, while also addressing emerging factors such as cybersecurity that may influence the safe functioning of modern lifts.
  • Maintenance and Inspection Activities
Particular attention is given to the safety of maintenance and inspection personnel through provisions related to pit safety, refuge spaces, access ladders, working platforms, and other measures that support safe access and working conditions during inspection and maintenance activities.
  • Compliance and Certification
Products and technical documentation are assessed against the updated provisions, supporting certification and recertification activities where applicable and helping manufacturers demonstrate compliance with internationally recognized standards.

EN ISO 8100 in the Context of the EU Machinery Regulation

The Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 will apply from January 2027, introducing an updated regulatory framework for machinery within the European Union. EN ISO 8100 supports this evolution by providing a contemporary international reference for lift safety and by addressing topics that are increasingly relevant in modern lift systems, including safety-related control functions, digital technologies, and cybersecurity considerations.

As EN ISO 8100-1 and EN ISO 8100-2 are adopted across Europe, they provide manufacturers, customers, and other stakeholders with a common technical reference supporting safety, innovation, and market harmonization within an evolving regulatory environment.
